Since running a football team and starting a business are remarkably similar, here is the outline we used for the podcast:
KEY INGREDIENTS OF BEING SUCCESSFUL AT ALL LEVELS OF LEADERSHIP IN SPORTS OR BUSINESS
OWNER
COMMON SENSE
CREATE STABILITY
BELIEVE IN PEOPLE
PRIDE OF THE COMPANY
CARE MORE THAN ANYONE
We discuss the importance of having an owner practice these five traits. Whether it’s sports or business, these are essential.
HEAD COACH-GENERAL MANAGER
WHO DO WE INTEND TO BE? COMES FROM THE OWNER—SIMPLE
PHILOSOPHY OF THE TEAM
FOUR PILLARS OF CREATING CULTURE
i. COMMAND OF ATTENTION
ii. COMMAND OF THE MESSAGE
iii. COMMAND OF SELF
iv. COMMAND OF TRUST
HOW TO TEACH/DEVELOP THE CULTURE
HOW EMPLOYEES IMPACT THE CULTURE
From the owner on down, we then need the leadership to understand how best to implement the vision of the company. We need to break down the four areas of leadership, then examine how the leadership allows for a culture to start, grow and nourish.
TALENT ACQUISITION
MUST DEFINE EACH JOB—SPECIFIC AND DETAILED
SCOUT INSIDE OUT, NOT OUTSIDE IN
ELIMINATION IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN FINDING
MUST TRAIN EMPLOYEES, CANNOT RETRAIN.
"Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don't want to."
— RICHARD BRANSON
It is vital to acquire talent that fits our specific needs. We must know what we want before we can add anyone to our team. We develop from within, which then allows our employees to understand we reward our best players.
TALENT DEVELOPMENT
WE MUST MAKE PLAYERS BETTER
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOOD AND GREAT
FALSE DUALITY
EMLINATING BIAS
WE NEED LOYALTY, NOT DEVOTION.
WE GIVE THEM A PURPOSE.
How we improve every day from the top down is vital to our success. There’s a stark difference between being loyal and being devoted. We want to build a growth mindset, an open-area community, to allow discussion on both sides of the debate. We will discuss bias, and how it, along with ego, will be the death of any industry.
FINAL MESSAGE
Football teams are no different than any other business. They need to have a great owner, great leadership, selfless workers, and value the team over the individual.
To better understand this outline breakdown and for a deep dive on the blueprint, give this special edition of the The GM Shuffle a listen, really hope you enjoy it.
